Without regular pond maintenance all year round, your pond can become an eyesore in your garden , with overgrown pond plants, weeds and dirty water.
Here are some winter pond maintenance tips to keep your pond and its inhabitants healthy through the colder months.
*Prune back any over hanging bushes and trees, this will prevent any dead foliage falling into the pond water and decaying, causing bad water and if it snows preventing snow falling into the pond water also.
This is the perfect time to tidy up your pond plants, remove them and repot them, and if needs be this is the time to divide the plants. Doing this before the winter arrives enables the plants roots to heal and get ready for blooming the coming summer.
* If you have not already installed a pump, now is the time to do so, improving the oxygen levels in the water will benefit both the health of the water but also the fish.
* Caring for your fish in the weeks coming up to winter is important, once the water temperature is in the low 70s (f) switch your food to a wheat germ based feed, which the fish can digest easily. It will be time to stop feeding the fish once the water temperatures reach 40 (f) and below.
Be careful not to overfeed your koi fish in the weeks coming up to the colder months, feed 2-3 times a day for a period of five minutes, after five minutes remove any excess food not eaten.
* If your pond does freeze over then DO NOT smash the ice, as this will cause shock to your ponds inhabitants.
Install a pond heater to prevent the water freezing, if this is not an option then there are other options for you and your pond. By placing a floating ball on the top of the pond, the movement of the ball will prevent the ice from forming. If ice does form then you can place a hot pan of water on the ice to gentle melt the ice away.
Caring for your pond all year round, means you and the family can enjoy it all year round, and by doing the small bits needed your pond will remain healthy for the warmer months!
